Making a decision to pursue post secondary education is most essential in order to secure ones own future. Education in the present era can be a very important investment and for this purpose student loans can play a vital role in providing the assistance to all those students who want to complete their higher education. Nova Scotia is one such association that provides loans and even assistance to those students to pursue their higher education. Recently this association introduced a new system for the academic year of 2007/2008, a system which will enable Nova Scotia to go through every application in a very accurate method.

There are various types of repayable funding process in which students seeking loans are judged by an examination of what their total costs are and what resources they have. The maximum loan a student can borrow depends upon a formula of resources, allowable expenses and assistance amount. A student can borrow up to $210 per week with the Canada Student Loan where as in the Nova Scotia Student Loan ; a student can borrow only $ 150 per week.

If a student returns to complete his full time studies and does not apply for another student loan, he has to notify the National Student Loan Service Center and get an interest free statement. If the student fails to notify his full time status, then his loans enter into the repayment mode. The loan repayment procedure is very simple as it is interest free and will remain till the student is a full timer.

Nova Scotia Student Loan is interest free for about 6 months after the date mentioned on the loan document as the end of the study period. Whereas the Canada Student Loan charges interest from the date mentioned on the loan document but after 6 months a student must begin his loan payment procedure. It is the students responsibility to contact his financial institutions in order to make his loan repayments regularly. The Nova Scotia Student Loan repayments are directly obtained from the bank account.

If in case a student residing in Canada cannot afford to make his Student Loan repayments due to his financial problems, he can apply for an interest relief. Under this interest relief program, a student can delay his student loan payments and during this period, his payments are done by the Federal and Provincial Governments. In order to benefit from this program, a student can contact National Student Loan Service Centre on Canada Student Loans and Royal Bank on Nova Scotia Student Loans. If still a student is not able to make his payments and has left his school five years back, then he can apply for an extended interest relief benefits. This extended interest relief program benefits a student 54 months from the period he has left the school.

In order to apply for a Nova Scotia Student Loan, one must be a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada. The applicant must also be a Nova Scotia resident, staying in Nova Scotia for at least 12 months.
